Landmarks of Memory and Freedom

Mobile and tablet application

The dictatorial regime’s dogma was to impose its principles on the Greek people through violence and fear. Constant surveillance, tanks and barricades on the streets, arrests, imprisonment and relentless torture were part and parcel of the bleak everyday life for the citizens of Athens during the period 1967-1974. However, this hostile urban landscape also fostered small islands of freedom, which started occupying more and more public space establishing landmarks of democracy. This digital walk app, specially designed for the project, takes users on an interactive guided tour around landmarks of the anti-dictatorship struggle, with each stop accompanied by original archival evidence.
